What is a double coat?
A double coat has two layers: a soft, dense undercoat that insulates against both cold and heat, and longer guard hairs that block sun and repel water. Twice a year the undercoat "blows" — sheds out in handfuls — which is when most owners are tempted to reach for the clippers.
Why shaving usually backfires
- It removes their air conditioning. A raked-out double coat traps a layer of air that buffers heat. Shaved skin takes sun directly.
- Sunburn risk. Pink skin under a shaved coat burns fast on summer walks.
- Patchy regrowth. In some dogs (especially seniors), the undercoat regrows faster than the guard hairs, leaving a woolly, uneven "coat funk" that can persist.
What to do instead: deshed the undercoat
- Daily glove pass during coat-blow weeks. A rubber-tipped deshedding glove pulls the loose undercoat out while you pet — most dogs think it's affection, not grooming.
- Weekly deeper session. Work in rows against then with the coat; a steam brush helps the fine fluff cling instead of going airborne.
- Bathe + dry, then deshed again. A bath loosens ready-to-drop undercoat; the post-bath deshed is the most productive one of the week. (See our guide to bathing a dog at home without the mess.)
The ASPCA's grooming guidance favors regular brushing over drastic measures — and the CDC's healthy pets basics note that routine care is part of keeping pets (and homes) healthy.
When shaving IS appropriate
Severe matting close to the skin, surgical sites, or a vet's explicit recommendation. That's clipper work with a purpose — not a summer haircut.

Double-coat FAQs
Which breeds are double-coated?
Huskies, malamutes, German shepherds, golden retrievers, labs, corgis, Pomeranians, Bernese, Akitas, and most spitz-type breeds among others.
Does shaving reduce shedding?
No — the same amount of fur grows and drops; the hairs are just shorter and often harder to clean up.
How often should I deshed during coat blow?
5–10 minutes daily for the 2–4 peak weeks, then weekly maintenance.
